I mentioned that I was going to modify 4 MJ900's in another thread but I got alot of people telling me they cant get theres to work right. Who has an MJ900? Any reason why I couldnt do a Mxi-Stream 900 ... I saw that many poeple did it in the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Maxi Mod" thread.

I am interested in this question too - I plan to mod two mj900s for my tank. I was wondering also if which mod you did (the one where you break the magnet or the one where you don't) affected how successful you were.

If you really want a sure fire on the MJ900 use a slightly smaller propeller. It seems the 1.38" Octura1435 is a hit or miss on some MJ900's.

I would check out a 1.25" Hobbico Nitro Hammer or 1.25" Octura Y531 propeller instead of the 1435.

Otherwise you can use a MJ1200.

I would prefer to use the MJ900 becuase of the big difference in wattage wihc is multiplied by 4 but I am open to use a MJ1200 if I have too. I will check into the props you suggested.

Do you have any idea of the amount of flow I would get by using a MJ900 with a 1.25" Hobbico Nitro Hammer or 1.25" Octura Y531 propeller? I have gotten a bunch of answers but I would like your opinion.

Id just stick with the 900's as opposed to the 12's. I have had both and there isnt a significant difference in flow once they are modded. Right now I have three modded 900's in my 90 gal and the flow is awesome, electricity useage is low. I do not, however, reccommend trying to use these on a wavemaker, as the motor starts in a random direction and even if you place a tab in the "sheath" to stop it from spinning backwards, it will still make a horrible noise for a minute or five before it switches.

I did one of these last night on a MJ900 with the 1435 prop. I had 2 MJs and broke the magnet itself when trying to take the stem off of one, but the other one worked fine. So I'm running one now on my 72. Honestly I'm wondering if 2 might be a bit much. I run one of my powerheads on the right wall pointing the lenght of the tank and the second on on the back wall in the upper left corner pointing at a 45 angle towards the center of the tank. I might make the right side of my tank the SPS side )with the modded MJ) and the left the softie side because it's pushing a lot of water. Other option is doing the second with the smaller prop. I cant image doing 4, even in a 120. i can feel the flow on the opposite side of the tank on mine.

Judging from look and feel side by side with a SEIO 1100, the MJ900 running on a Nitro Hammer was much stronger. This was done in a LFS so I didn't really have time to do an indepth comparison.

I did some bag tests once on the MJ900 w/Nitro Hammer and got something like 1 gallon for approx. every 2 to 3 seconds which worked out to be around 1200-1800gph. I don't doubt that the slight bit off on my watching the second hand could swing the actual reading one way or the other but I think conservatively 1200gph should be a good guestimate.

I wish there was a more definitive and scientific way to test the flow rate on these.

i did the 1200 just now and in a 100g i can see you only need 1 1200,water went all the way across the tank, i just finished the magnet mount when the silicone is dry she's going in. :) worked first time and there was more flow :)

reefnewbie54321 - I used the MJ900 mod with the Dumas 3004 prop in my 80 gallon. You can see it in the upper right corner. You can see the water blowing off the Biolife at the top of the tank and the brown gorgonian in the foreground being pushed to the right, a lot of flow!! Downside with the 900 is that I have to start it near the surface then lower it. The 900 is just not strong enough to start it in deep water. I just never turn it off! ;)

Flobajob - I removed the plastic from the magnet. You do not break the magnet and IMO I think it is more reliable (one single prop shaft).

Not sure what you mean about removing the plastic but not breaking the magnet. I did #2 from mjmods.com

http://www.reefchili.com/advanced.html

That's what I always thought what people meant when they "broke the magent" for a build. As opposed to #1 which doesn't break anything.

Like the mounting. I was just going to glue mine to a magnet. Food for thought.

MJAnderson - Sorry, I should have said that you will be breaking the plastic ends off the impeller and removing it from the magnet, but there is a chance you could break the magnet itself. The magnet is brittle and if you are not careful you could break it. I hope that is clear!:D

Why cant it start in deep water? What would the diffreence be?

reefnewbie54321 - The 900 just doesn't have the power to spin the Dumas 3004 prop deep. If you look on the left of my picture I have a MJ1200 on my Aqua C. I installed the mod I have into it and it will start every time deep. It just has more power but uses a more electricity.

Like dhnguyen stated you would need a smaller prop on the 900 to ensure a start deep.

we tested them with a garbage bag in the tub with a 1200 and a dumas 3004 and a 900 with a octura prop (i forget what one 2035 or 1435) and the 1200 has significantly more flow(was able to fill the garbage bad much faster).
