Im going to be upgrading my tank from a 20l sumpless system to a 29gallon with a sump and i wanted to know what return pump should i get.

I want to get rid of the equipment in my tank so the return pump would provide all the circulation in my tank. kinda like a combo of a return and closed loop (is that a good idea or should i stick with power heads in there?)

So the questions are
1. what return pump should i get
2. is it a good idea to use my return as my only circulation or should i still use powerheads.

just in case it matters i will be keeping mostly sps in the tank

Good queston, that is what I am trying to figure out. How much turnover do you want in the tank and the sump? I found a thread that might help a little

i would go with the smallest eheim and get some maximods or some of the nanostreams coming out soon.

and no, its not a good idea to get all your flow from your return, as the amount of flow needed for sps will make your tank LOUD from the water rusing over the overflows.

what kind of skimmer will you have? directly feeding it?

The eheim pumps are good, reliable pumps.

What if I used another small eheim or something and made a closed loop for additional flow, I don't hardly any PH in my display

Go with the smaller pump and a closed loop. I set my main pump up with a SCWD that feeds 2 nozzles on each end of the tank. The closed loop feeds 2 duckbill nozzles from the back wall. As the SCWD switches the end streams distort the closed loop streams, creating srally random flow patterns.

thanks for all the suggestions. i don't really want ph in my display. i kinda wanted to hide everything so i'll prob do the closed loop.

what would the suggested turnover for the closed loop be if i want to keep sps and send 5x turnover to the sump?

yes, by direct feeding it you ensure the skimmer is getting the dirtiest water. this is only if you get a recirculating model.

I use areturn pump up to the capacity of your overflow, if aditional flow is required a closed loop or a power head can be added.

I'm looking at doing 5-6 X turnover rate on my 29 I'm planning. What are the best and most reliable pumps I should look into for my return and my closed loop system?

You need more than that for SPS corals. You can get the 5-6 turns from your return pump and add another 5 turns from your closed loop.
I would get an Eheim 1250 for return, it will give you about 125 gph in the tank. and the 1048 for closed loop will give you about another 125 gph
