View Full Version : Fiberboard for canopy. Or 1/4" ply?

Hello. Anyone using this material for their canopy? I'm thinking of using it as the skin and just painting a couple of coats of marine finish.

I'm looking to use something that is lightweight and not expensive. I am hesitant to use 1/4" ply because I've heard it warps quite easily.

Would 1/4" ply warp even if I coated it with spar verathane?

Most of the fiberboard materials are a lot heavier than ply due to the glue content. As long as you have a decent framework, the plywood should not warp if well sealed. Use exterior grade ply.

Alright. Thanks bassnman. Quarter ply it is.

Pay close attentions to sealing the plywood ends, give the ends extra coats and on the final coat don't sand over the ends. I heard most moisture will creep into the ends like a wicking effect if they are not totally sealed.

Also, if you make a lightweight frame of 1 x 1 or similar and then skin with your 1/4 ply , you should be fine.
