went to my lfs and bought some really nice live rock, 30lbs. The guy there showed me "base rock" that was like $2.99 a pound, what is base rock??? ive been doing this for a while and never have seen this stuff. Is it live?? it was running in a salt tank with other live rock....and if it is live why is it so cheap???? If anyone can shed some light on this subject that would be great.

Thanks,
Vin

In the lfs that I've seen around where I live, base rock is either completely dry rock that's suitable for a sw tank, or wet rock that is pretty much void of life. The wet rock is not entirely dead, as it should have some of the bacteria we all want, but that is about it. It's not likely to have any coralline or hitchhikers.

Base rock is dead until you seed it with live rock. A lot of people (myself included) use it to build the base of a reef structure. Then you cover it with pretty live rock, and after some time, you can't tell the difference.
