Right I am not sure now, what have you opted for? Why did you opt for that method? Are you happry with your method?
And finally, will drilling weaken my tank??

I once heard someone say, siphons ocassionally fail, gravity never will. Get the tank drilled.

If you can and if the tank's not tempered then drill it.

I have a Lifereef siphon overflow which has never failed, and I highly doubt it ever will. I have it since I added a sump after the tank was up, running and established. For a tank that is not set up, I would drill it. No reason not to unless you have tempered panels.

I have never and would never consider NOT drilling the tank
my tanks are always drilled

Same here... drill it or get it drilled. If you HAD to go with an overflow, go with a U-tube design.
