View Full Version : My thoughts on Seattle fish stores

I am originally from Vancouver, WA (10 minutes from Portland, OR). Since moving here, I have been frustrated with the number and size of reef stores in the area. There seem to be about 4 stores around the Portland area that absolutely dominate anything that I have found in the Seattle area in terms of pricing and selection, especially if you are looking for SPS! Maybe you guys will be able to give me some leads and maybe you can learn from my observations.

So, here is my interpretation:

-Blue Sierra is a nice, big shop with a decent selection of just about everything but SPS. I say decent as a relative term to what else there is to choose from the area. They have a lot of tanks, both fresh and salt. They even have pond supplies here as well. In general, you will find a fair selection of fish, tons of supplies and a modest offering of soft corals depending on their shipments. This is a great place to go if you need reef tank supplies (dry goods). They also have a good deal of used reef gear too.

SPS: Minimal
Soft/LPS: Moderate, depending on shipments, higher pricing.
Fish: Moderate to large selection, average health, fair pricing, no guarantee
Reef supplies & tanks: Huge selection, fair prices.
Staff: They know are eager to help you, knowledgeable and fun to talk with as well.

-Saltwater City: Never been there! I drove past their location the other day looking for the store, but I didn't find it. I went right to where it showed up on the map, but maybe I am just blind. I even drove around the strip mall complex that should have housed their store according to the address. I was in the middle of the "auto-mall" type area, large stores and flashy signs; it’s possible I just missed the store. I was across the street from a Rolls Royce and a Bentley dealership, if anyone familiar with this store could tell me what I did wrong I would appreciate it. I didn't stay long to keep looking because I had other stores on my "tour" and had to get back home by a certain time, I will try again soon after I call for directions and have the time.

I will fill more in once I visit, maybe tomorrow if I can find the place and they are open.

-Below Sea Level. There used to be a store in the U-district (5 minutes from downtown) that closed. Sadly for me, it used to be in walking distance and now it is gone. The last time I went there was a few months ago. The store was closed, but looking in I saw the drained tanks on the sides and it couldn't have been closed long because the display tank was still set up with fish, LR and lights. Although the front of the display was becoming almost completely covered with algae, there were still several fish swimming in the tank. It was eerie and sad to see.

-The Fish Store: This store is located just a few minutes out of downtown, a couple miles north of the U-district. They show longevity, the store has been open at its current location for around 25 years, however, for reefers they area bit of a let down. They have a tiny coral section, no real SPS to speak of, mostly just small low light species of various inverts. Even with their almost unmentionable reef stock, this is still a decent store in terms of fish, other supplies, live rock and pricing.

The Fish Store sells good live rock (excellent color and bioactivity) and quite a few super healthy saltwater fish, but it is clear that the focus of the shop is on freshwater tanks. I'd say 75% of their visible aquariums are FW. I have spent countless hundreds of dollars with this store over the years for both fresh and saltwater needs. The staff is a bit interesting. Overall they are knowledgeable, but quite as friendly and eager to help as the Blue Sierra folks. Some of them can tend to get preachy about the “right” way to do things, and it gets even more bizarre when you realize the staffers often preach opposite from on another.

I bought all of my liverock (cured for 6.99/lb is cheaper than most stores in this area!). Among many other items, I also bought a 50 gallon acrylic tank and all the goodies for what felt like fair prices. Prices for fish generally run on the high side, but they always have good "sales" on a decent portion of their fish, you just have to go in and poke around often to find the deals! Look for their New Guinea tribal art hanging from the ceiling too.

SPS: Maybe 2-5 species of bland, lowlight species.
Soft/LPS: Small selection, but you can find some deals here occasionally.
Fish: Very healthy, fair pricing for the quality and guarantee (I believe the 2 week fish warranty applies to saltwater, I will check though).
Reef supplies & tanks: Small selection of high output lighting, skimmers and everything else that is exclusive to saltwater, large selection of everything else.
Staff: For the most part the staff knows saltwater, but you find tons of conflicting viewpoints. I have had one person tell me that “no way

-Denny’s Pet World: Wow, this store is massive; I just wish it was filled with only fish supplies. I was a little hesitant about the store when I first walked in and saw all sorts of bird and other non fish pet supplies. However, nearly ½ of the store is aquarium based, and probably 30% of that area is saltwater. On the fish front, they do mostly saltwater, with a HUGE selection of FW fish that looked to be healthy. On the saltwater front, they had two racks of tanks set up with fish, but one of the racks was shut down and emptied. It looked like this may have been temporary though. Their fish appear to be in good health, and their coral selection is small but offers almost as much variety as Blue Sierra. Their prices seem reasonable as well.

They have many of tanks and supplies for saltwater setups at reasonable prices. However, I did not see much in the way of halide lighting for sale. The store has a ton of gear, good looking fish and corals, but they are definitely not focused on saltwater. It was fairly busy while I was in the store, but the staff was mostly busy in other parts of the store. I have no idea of their knowledge, and it didn’t seem like they had anyone dedicated to the aquarium section. Overall, this is a good place to come if you are an experienced SW aquarist and you know what you want and don’t need help with compatibility, etc. Who knows, maybe their saltwater guy was sick that day? I will go again.

SPS: Not much at all.
Soft/LPS: Moderate, a little less than Blue Sierra.
Fish: Small selection (half of the tanks were offline), healthy, fair prices.
Reef supplies & tanks: Large supply, but you better know what you are looking for.
Staff: Busy selling birds, I bet they have aquarium specialized people, I just didn’t find them they day I was there. I will report back when I go again.

Well, this is all I have toured in this area, I will report more as I find them, and update my experiences with the stores I have been to.

So, where the heck is the SPS in the Puget Sound? Do I really have to drive to Tacoma, Poulsbo, or Spokane to find it? (I will if I have to!). Seattle is much larger than Portland, yet Portland has several stores with good SPS selections, much more soft coral/LPS/other low light varieties and more competitive pricing. There is more money and there are more people in the Seattle area, it would seem more “normal” if the situation was reversed.

Well I didn’t intend to write this much, I hope some people find this at least somewhat useful, please feel free to put in your opinion on my findings and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me about other stores in the region, I’d love to plan a trip to Tacoma or Spokane in the near future.

-Andrew

Wasn't/Isn't there a LFS in Poulsbo?

I was banking on that as I will be in Kingston in a week and a half.

Yes, I think its called Ocean Reef Aquatics. Its just a bit of a pain for me to get to having to take a ferry and all. I'd like to check it out, from what I've heard it is actually pretty good.

What area are you moving to up here?

Oh, very nice. I have some relatives that live in Edmonds just across the sound. Well since you are already on that side, getting to Poulsbo probably won't take as long as getting to denny's, blue sierra, or saltwater city since they are all on the east side of lake washington.

There are two in that area. The two being Shark Reef and Ocean Reef Aquatics. The two stores are very competive in pricing, and usually have something nice to reveal.
There will be a PSAS Club meeting on August 19th in that area.
That is the time to go and shop, and meet some other people trading corals.

I could not pull up the link for Ocean Reef Aquatics.

Here is information about club meetings taking place and things happening.

I hope this helps,

I can chime in from Spokane: there's a good lfs on Pines @ I-90, up a few blocks: Aquatic Dreams. Fair selection of everything, fish, frags, lps, sps, softies, live rock, and equipment. Kept by an experienced reefer, good advice. Meeting spot for local club. www.aquaticdreams.biz

aclos3...who doesnt like ferry rides...not a pain, just takes a little time to get there is all.

Ed Hahn.....mister man with the camera at all of the club events. My site is down while I change it to a ecommerce site so you can shop from home!!!

dhnguyen, when will you be in the area? I am hosting a Maxi-Jet DIY workshop at my place in Poulsbo on Aug.19, and since you are the man when it comes to that, I hope you are in the area and can attend.

I love ferry rides! I just got back from Friday harbor a couple of minutes ago. I stayed in my car with the windows open for the whole ride from FH to Anacortes (I had a 'view' spot!). I was mostly just making a gripe about the extra time and cost of the ferry ride. I will try to check out these shops some time soon.

I think a few of us should get together and carpool over to visit the stores around the poulsbo area.

aclos3: you were at the OLD location of SWC. I believe they moved from that location to their new location quite some time ago (yrs). Their current location is about 1/2 block east of where you were at: 14150 NE 20th St. F3 (425-644-7050).

Their selection is 100% saltwater (of course). Lately, I have not been very impressed with their selection or quality of livestock (I've seen a lot of dead fish in the tanks for whatever reason). They do have a lot of corals, but their prices are on the high side IMO.

Just got to Kingston yesterday. Beautiful place and the house we're renting is sweet as well (if you don't mind hiking a steep walkway that is)

I actually saw a sign by Bond Rd. (I think?) for Ocean Reef. Yes I'm the idiot driving around with my big 26ft. UHAUL truck while trying to find my ways to the place we're renting

Don't know if I can make your Aug 19th MJ mod party though :) what with so much crap we have to unload from the trucks still.

as for SPS. hard to find a lot. Barry was new in town at kahuna corals but has just closed. Ocean Reef aquatics is about 1/3 to 1/4 the price of saltwater city on many things. Blue seirra be careful with SPS because they have redbugs and haven't treated that I know of. Barrier reefs has SPS frags and is about 10 mins from Blue sierra(at a home by appointment). check the reeffrontiers psas forum to find out more. in tacoma there is a good store but still minimal sps. If you are looking for frags On reeffrontiers there is paul (AKA fragman), dang(tamarindthai), kevin(spokane store aquatic dreams) (kevinpo moderates SPS forum) other than that I use Reefermadness and if there are specifics you are looking for let me know.

saltwater city- two blocks east of where you were. across from ross, progolf.

That is cool that you are here. Mario has the blue sign out front and one of the northwest tank builders is right there also. Jonathan (jnarowe) is right there with his 1000 gallon setup also. I am going to visit it soon.

Yeah I was kinda running errands too so we couldn't really stay too long but I did get a chance to meet Ed as well.

Now the bad news. It looks like all of my SPS didn't make the trip. I guess 3 days without proper lighting and good clean water was too much for them to bear. I'm still hoping that maybe one of 2 might bounce back but they're all very bleached out and are in sad shape.

Pleasure meeting you Don. I hope to see more of you in future at more gatherings. My corals made it back from Silverdale with no problem tonight to Tri-Cities. That was a 4 hour trip for corals at Silverdale tonight, I had a california Tort that lasted since 10am this morning. I am curious what happened?
Do you think it was temperature? I am sorry you lost your corals. Man, that Sucks!

dhnguyen
08/20/2006, 09:07 AM
I think you're right Ed on the temperature. I had an airpump running during the move but like an idiot, I forgot to hook up a heater. When we arrived at Kingston, the water felt pretty cold easily 60-50 F

This move has been pretty hellish but even with everything bad that happened, it was still worth it. I am glad to be able to say I live in beautiful Washington now.

The good thing about this is that I get to re-aquascape my tank :)

I will agree. I would buy SPS at SWC before the other 2 close ones because of know pests. the only problem is SWC sell the maricultured acro's for $125. that is like 400% markup. why do that when I can get them for 60-80 other places. Regal angel the I was quoted over 200. bought a redsea from Ocean reef for $85. mystery wrasse same deal. helfrichi firefish also the same. i bought all the fish from MArio at Ocean Reef aquatics for the same as 1 at SWC.

Hey... So I was in Seattle today checking out the city and my tendency to follow good food led me to the International District

Anyway I passed by what I could have sworn were 2 LFS on or near 6th Ave. and S. Jackson St. One of them definitely had a SW display tank I could see as I drove by. Anyone know what stores these are and if they're worth checking out? Didn't really have time to stop to check them out.

King's Discus is down in the International District. They used to have SW, but the last time I was in there, it was strictly FW. There's also another store in one of the alleys a couple blocks west of King's Discus. I can't remember exactly what it's called, but it is a FUNKY store! It's all FW, but definitely worth a visit if you're in the area....

-Ok, I finally got into Saltwater city the other day and I was pleasantly surprised by their very nice selection of lps, zoos, shrooms and even sps! Then I saw the prices. They are the only store in the seattle area that carries a really nice assortment of corals and they know it! That being said, I know I will still spend money there since they are only about 15 minutes from where I live and they just have things that other stores around here don't. Their fish are in pretty good shape, but again on the pricey side. They recieve shipments on Tuesdays, so if you want to get the first grabs at the new stuff, that is probably the day to head in. The verdict: A great little store, but be ready to drop some coin. What else would you expect from a LFS that is pretty much across the street from a Rolls-Royce dealership?

SPS: Best selection for the near Seattle stores.
Soft/LPS: Tons, many tanks full of different corals, healthy and large, but you are going to pay for it.
Fish: Fair selection, great health and kinda high pricing.
Reef supplies & tanks: Good selection.
Staff: Nice people, eager to talk and help out. They make pretty sound recommendations on purchases.

Oh, and an update on "The fish store." I looked closely at their live rock and saw lots of aptasias growing. Previously, I have been pleased with the amount of life and color of their rock. The discovery of the aptasias is a bit disappointing, hopefully they get this cleared up soon.

Blue Sierra sells some really nice overflow boxes. They sell the expensive CPR overflows that come with vacuum pumps to maintain the siphon (almost bought on of these really cool overflows), but they also sell the inexpensive U-tube style boxes. Now, I know some people don't like U-tubes, but when set up properly they will stop, restart, and even resiphon all by themselves.

Here is a pic of my overflow (I added the big silencer to the 1" stand pipe that came with the overflow.)
