I have an oak stand. I just stripped it, sanded, and stained it. The old finnish had worn away on the door. I asume this is from salt. I was going to put polyurthane on it, but I think that is what they put on it before. Have any of you had a problem like this. I want to make sure I put something on that will work. Do you have to use an epoxy to finish it.

Just use several coats of poly and you'll be fine. I did 5 coats on my last stand. Any dried salt wipes right off. I think the problem is the assembly line finish, a thin coat of sprayed on that quickly breaks down.

I used spar urethane - several coats and have been pretty happy with it. In areas of high-UV (below halide lights) I have seen some spalling of the urethane but it seems to work great on the inside of the cabinet.
