I'm in the middle of a tank move and had to remove my sandbed to move the tank. It was about 3" deep and was in place for about a year and a half. Can I use my old sand in the tank or do I need to replace it? My fear is that because it was stirred up it will release toxins into the tank that will be bad for my SPS once I add them back.

I would always replace the sand just to be safe.

I agree. Save a cup or two to re-seed the new bed.

If it isn't going to cost an arm and a leg you should probably replace it and seed it with like 10 cups or so of the old sand. This will give the tank a fresh new look.

Agree with the washing. Mind you I have a 240 gal so it would take at least 15 bags at 20 dollars a pop to replace. I have washed mine several times with no problems. It is a real pain in the butt though.

In addition I think one should let the sand sit in fresh saltwater mix for a week then changed out and done again . This may help get leaching compounds out like po4 or other things.

Just a thought
