i've always wanted the star polyps i've seen in everyone's pictures and i saw that everyone says they're pretty easy to take care of. i went and bought what looked like hundreds of these guys and put it in my tank only to never see them out again.. its been almost 3 days now, i just did a 15% water change (today), hopefully i will see them out tonight, but its not looking good as of now...
i have a ~90 gal hex tank and i placed them at the top of my live rocks (about 8-10inches from the surface and another 4inches from my 2x55 pc lights. my red chili sponge looks healthier than ever growing at the bottom of my tank. my anemone looks real healthy too. my fish look happy - flame angel, maroon clown... AND my ph and alkalinity were fine as of last night. i just want to see my little green star polyps :( Any suggestions??? please...

here are missing green star polyps:

my gsp took 4 days to appear in my tank, and even then i had to turkey blast some brine shrimp juice over them, that encouraged them to come out, worth a try

i've heard that it could take a couple days from others too.... the first day, there was one polyp that came out... so i figured the rest would come out soon... thanks

Did you buy them as a mat or on a rock?

When I go my gsp it took nearly 3 weeks for them to open fully. That was with perfect water quality( Ph 8.2, nitrates 0ppm, nitrites 0ppm, phos 0ppm). They have been in my system for 4 months now and are doing great and growing.

Are you sure that you don't have them upside down?

When I frag mine into mats, it takes up to 2 weeks for them to open fully and attach. Just make sure they are placed where you can keep them cropped, because they can very easily overtake your tank in time (like xenia).

They are oriented the right way in the picture. I agree that they sometimes are very slow to start coming out. Since the rest of the tank is healthy, water parameters shouldn't be an issue.

Give them medium flow and they'll be fine. They are indesctructable.

GSP's are not an LPS coral, BTW. They are more of a softie.

thanks a lot to everyone that replied!!! i finally saw signs of them coming out this morning... when i did my water change yesterday, i also adjusted a powerhead to give just a little more flow their way... i have them placed on top of a rock and the mat is slowly starting to take shape over the rock.

someone commented that i might want to keep them in a way such that i can easily crop them... how would you suggest i do that???

forget the gsp's....that anemone needs light, it looks totally bleached.

well, like i said, i only have 2x55 watt pc's... and when i placed it near the top, it worked its way down to the bottom in a day... not my fault....

An anemone will not survive under that lighting. That anemone is not "healthy"..it has lost all of it's zooxanthellae That looks to be an alveopora top left? If so it needs MH's as well. The chili coral looks good because it is non-photosynthetic, I hope you are feeding it. I would suggest you remove the anemone before it dies and pollutes the tank or upgrade the lighting.GSP is a good indicator of proper water parameters, particularly PH.
