I really want both but can only buy one right now. I'm using distilled water for my nano (20L) which is working well and i'm tired of manually turning on my lights, having a rats nest of cables, wife complaining, etc. I'll have both eventually but having trouble deciding which to buy right now.

get the rodi filter and go to walmart and buy a 7.00 timer for your lights.

Buying my RO/DI unit is one of the best things I have ever purchased and I can't believe it took me so long to do it!

Figures... I went out and forgot to turn on my cooling fan for the mh light and the tank was up to 86. Good thing no corals or fish yet. Guess I will need some sort of electronic babysitter afterall. :D

get a good water purifier. I bought bottled water for years. I don't even want to guess how many other toys I could have paid for with all the money I wasted.

Looking at it from a practical point of view.

The RO/DI will be the single best improvement to the input water source. You'll notice the difference within a few weeks. You'll see it in ALL your animals!

The light timer is merely a conveniece. They can be had cheaply and are as effective as high dollar timers.
