i got a male and a female.. the female is yellow/orange like they are supposed to be, but it has a pale square on its side. all the female pics ive seen online dont have a square.

I think it's another male ... one who has "faded" due to being kept in strong lighting and/or due to a lack of proper nutrition.

it's a male if it has a pink square on it!!:mad2:

From what I've read, the Squareback comes from deeper waters. They tend to become pale in coloration in the brighter lighting of aquariums.

Maybe it is in the process of switching to a male.

You've got a transitioning female to male. How are the two getting along?

it is most likely turning male. it doesnt really matter if there is already a dominant male in the tank or not. i have 6 bartlett anthias and 4 of them are dominant males with two females. it is pretty funny when they fight over the females but they sure are pretty.

they dont fight

Then I wouldn't worry too much. Just be ready to pull one if aggression does start.
