I just got one as a hitchhiker....any info would be helpful, as I know nothing about them or the care they need.

That's a barnacle. There are tons of different types of bivalves and barnacle is just a little more specific;)
No special care...the barnacle will filter particulates from the water column.

OK, I've learned something.
I didn't know that barnacle's were living.....I thought they were just a encrusting type of organism.

Actually, I was thinking more of an algae type.....not with a clam-looking critter inside.

so thats what is on our torch. I just thought that it might be part of the torch. Hahahaha I am an idiot. lol
