liverock rubble

im replaceing the sponge in my filter with liverock rubble, to keep down nitrates...but how do i get liverock rubble, just take a hammer to a piece of liverock i dont need?

Yea, or you can buy it from an LFS, most of the stores that have live rock for sale always have rubble pieces at the bottom of their live rock storing tanks.

Be careful how you set this up though because a tightly packed rubble pile can be just as problematic as a sponge if water flow isn't good enough to keep detritus from piling up.

If you are diligent about keeping your sponge clean you shouldn't have issues, I know it can become a pain but it's just one of those things that have to be done.
