hood for small non-show tank - do I need to seal?

I need to setup some retro T5 lighting for my 15g grow out tank. I'm going to build a hood for these. In the past, for my show tanks, I've primed and used 3 coats of a latex paint and have never had a problem. Since this setup will be in the "back room" will I have any problems if I do nothing? The hood is made out of poplar (hardwood) for the sides and plywood for the top.
