Do I empty the cup whenever it fills with water? Or do I need to leave it full. With the new tank and adding new rock the cup fills fast. What should I be doing? Also do I need to adjust anything on it?

You should adjust the control on the skimmer so that it fills up much slower. It should take two or three days to fill the collection cup, and you should empty it as often as you feel like it. It should never be allowed to fill up because it will either spill back into the tank or spill onto the floor and make a mess.

is it filling with clear water or nasty gunk?

How do I adjust it? The air intake or the Foam Stack? The stack is all the way down but out of the water.

I get tea color water that feels slimey.

good question there as if the stack is all the way down it really shouldn't be pulling out anything. however i have heard some chemicals and foods will make the skimmer raise fast and fill the cup up. you may want to ask this ? in the equipment forum.

They did give me a packet of Bacteria or Starter with the Liverock. And was instructed to leave the skimmer of for 5 hrs which I did. I wonder if it is just an initial burst till it gets that leveled.

If you are into DIYing things you can drill your collection cup and put a drain in it. Then just run the drain line to a milk jug or similar large collection chamber.

when I first got the protien skimmer, I had to empty like 3 times for first week in the intital...now I empty once a week. (Dang that cup sure does stink! lol)

I read someplace that a wife was told that it smelled like homemade cookies and to take a whiff and she got mad at the hubby or something.

So one day I thought I would be funny. I told my niece to smell the overflow up because it smelled like homemade cookies and she ended up tossing her own cookies. :rollface:
