No stupid questions here !
a closed loop is where water is taken from your tank through a pump and back into your tank to circulate your tank in simple terms. if you do a search there are alot of differant ways to do this. look on the DIY forum there are several threads to look at.

Why do you think that? As long as you size your plumbing correctly, and maybe practice gluing PVC on some extra pieces first, you should be fine. The worst is getting the tank drilled (I personally do not like over the back CL systems). Just find someone local to drill the tank for you. That's what I did. Draw up a diagram of your CL, then post it here. People can then correct any errors, and then you'll be good to go.

Well im trying to get my mom to let me get a 180 gallon tank but she wants me to have it all planed out and the price and everything. And I was going to get a reef ready tank so that i didnt have to drill it. Does anyone know can i just use powerheads for the 180 gallon tank. What kind. I dont think i want to do a closed loop. on a reef ready.

If you are going to plan and build a system I would get one with holes drilled for a closed loop, internal overflow and returns. I cannot stress enough how nice it is and how clean it looks to have everything plumbed through the glass. It costs more initially but the conveniance and simplicity of everything far outway the the $$$$$. I had holes drilled for everything in my tank eccept the returns and I wish I had just gone ahead and drilled two more holes. I have 10 total and I wish I had 12

Closed loops have advantages and disadvantages just like everything else. I went with a pair of Tunze Streams in my 180. They are much simpler, consume less elecricity, and I think they provide a more natural flow. The drawbacks are that they are bulky and fairly pricey.

If it is reef ready does it have a closed loop?

reef ready just means built in overflow

You would have to have the tank drilled to add a closed loop.
