I keep my salinity around 1.024 - 1.025 and my pH at 8.2. I would say your pH is high. 8.1 or 8.2 is ideal.

I keep my salinity (SG) at 1.025, pH runs from 7.8 at night to 8.3 in day...
A pH of 8.6 is in my view is danger high. If your adding a buffer stop.
But remember it's more then just pH, keep you dKH at around 8 to 12 as well.

Make sure you truly have a 8.6 pH before you do anything. I tested for Ca w/ a lousy test kit and I almost dosed off that reading before wising up and buying a salifert Ca kit. I use a PinPoint digital pH monitor but I also have a salifert kit to compare. Also, people have a tough time maintaining 8.3 levels, let alone 8.6!

Vinegar (White or Distilled if you have it would be best)
Literally only use a few DROPS, wait a few hours and recheck the pH.
But please double check your pH readings before you do any thing like that.

A pH meter is best, they will run you about $100, the one by PinPoint is the best as it reads pH in 0.01 degrees. After that you just need to calibrate the meter about every 3 to 6 weeks, and replace the probe about every year (about $45). No more need to mess with test kits just glance at the LCD, and let it run 24/7.

You can get one from Marine Depot or That Fish Place. WELL Worth the small investment.
