I was wondering how many people use filter socks. What are the pro's and con's of using them. And how often do you clean your filter socks?

I use them on both tanks! They are so mush easier than my old wet/dry's filter. I just switch them out and wash the dirty one.

I only change them once a week but some people change them as much as once A DAY! Guess it just depends whats going on with your tank.

Clean them in the wshing machine 1/3 cup of bleach.....hang to dry...

I use 4 socks in a rotation. Wash them once a week, dry for a week...

Works for me.

If I wash them in the washing machine with bleach - do I need to use laundry soap as well or just the bleach?

do not use soap when washing them just water and bleach. and i suggest running another cycle with just water to help remove any bleach left on

Use em religously. Change out once a week. Like others bleach. Rinsed or washed in just plain water. Stay away from laundry or dish soaps the surfactants are hard to get out and they contain orthophosphates..................

Thanks for all of the answers! I guess it's time to clean mine. I've had it installed for about a week and a half but only have one. I'll have to run up to my LFS and get another

Don't use em. They catch beneficial critters that otherwise end up in the sump. I like the critter to stay in the tank system.

Pat

Even if I have an overflow box near the top of the tank? That's the only area that water leaves the tank - at the top.

I use one for microbubble control. Have run the tank without socs since the microbubble problem is now better, and, the tank just looks better when I use them. So... I am back on the socs!

I have four. When the downdraft into the soc overflows the soc I change it. This averages every 2.5 days.

The dirty ones go in a used grocery store plastic bag. When the bag fills up...

I throw all four in the washer, cold water, capful of bleach, air dry.

TIP: Wife will occasionally throws grocery bag with all four socs into the garbage if I forget to put them away in my "fish" cabintet.

I liked how clean they made the water, but it killed me to see all those little pods and micro stars caught in there. After the third time I spent 20 minutes picking little critters out of a filter sock, I stopped using them.
