We are all too familiar with the track record of the original Rio pumps that would spontaneously combust.

What about the Hyperflows, Rio plus UL listed, and Sieos pumps? I have not really heard much on these pumps. Has Rio turned their product around? The rumor is that they no longer use oil in the casing.

Please list your experience with the newer pumps like I have below so we can see if Its time to take another look at these products. Are Rio pumps the Hyundai’s of the reefing industry???????

Rio+ 1700 runs great 2yrs no maintenance (X2 pumps)
Rio+ 2100 runs great 2 yrs no maintenance
Rio+ 2500 runs great 2yrs no maintance
Rio Hyper flow 17, runs like a champ BUT, if the elec. Flickers the pump only runs at ¼ the normal output until I reset it.
Old Rio 1998 Non grounded, non UL listed, Blew up this week. This pump did run for 8 years with out a problem.

Also if the newer pumps do fail is it just s pump failure or is their also a catastprphic loss in livestock?

Rio 600: Lasted about a year before the flow decreased by alot and it had start up issues

Rio 1700: I've had it for over a year now as my return pump and some days it won't start up right away while others days it will be fine.

Two Seios 620s: Worked for 6 months before they wouldn't start.

rio 1100 that came with ccs skimmer: Worked for maybe 3-4 months before not starting again.

Rio that came with my Coralife SS quit after 4 months. But....It was just locked up due to build up on the impellor ceramic rod shaft. I cleaned it in vinegar and it works good as new. When it quit working it did no damage and did not leak anything. I have had other pumps do the same. Calcium build up will lock up a pump after a while.

Rio 600 6 years old, originally a skimmer pump converted to a recirc pump. Never a problem, runs continuously 24/7.

Rio 17hf return. Ran flawlessly for 4 months until tank started leaking. Cleaned and stored, 6 months later when ready to use discovered the impeller had swelled and rusted jamming itself in case. Pump would be about 1year old today.

Bought another Rio 17hf 4 months ago when I set-up my new tank. Pump eventually slowed then stopped. Discovered impeller started swelling again pinching the ceramic bearings. Filed the bearings and pump is running like new again.

I also have a Cap 660 or something like that used as a recirc pump for about 5 years with no issues.

I had a Cap 3500 or something like that as a skimmer pump that started leaking stray volts. Replaced with another used skimmer and same type of Cap 35?? with no issues.

Just this morning I purchased another Rio 17hf brand new to replace the return 17hf with the bearing issues. Upon cranking it up it had a bad humming noise. Through troubleshooting by switching impellers found the brand new impeller was out of balance causing pump to vibrate. Will be returned Monday.

I've never had or heard of a pump exploding or otherwise failing catastrophically other than stray volts or plain out failure to start. Usually the failure to start was attributed to calcium buildup.

I use seio 1500's. My first one was about 2 years old and when I was cleaning it I broke the ceramic shaft. I have had absolutely no problems with mine.

I have had a Seio 620 and 820 since the first week they were introduced and no problems with either. I have a Hyperflow HF20 that never worked right from day one. I was too dumb to return it as it was only a spare and now its too late. I think the impeller is warped and it drags on the shaft.

Seio 820, 1100, and 1500. The 820 and 1100 are a year old. Both occasionally had issues restarting, but I'm lazy and don't clean them often enough. Plus they are easy to kick start anyhow.

The 1500 is too new to really give an opinion on.

I wouldn't say Rio's are the hyundai of reefing, but rather the exploding pinto from the 70's!
Friends don't let friends buy Rio's!

I have a Rio 800, three years, used intermittently, never a problem.

Have a Seio 820, starts every time I have to unplug it. It works like a champ for the past year. THe suction cups work better than the maxi jet I have. No complaints here about RIO

I bought two used SEIO 820s. Both were around a year old, I believe. One quit on me after two weeks (not an impeller issue at all - the motor no longer works, thankfully it didn't burn up), and the other is working fine. Can't wait to replace the remaining one with a couplpe of MJ stream mods - I don't trust them.

Seio 820: 2 for about 2yrs, no problems.

Rio: several, years ago. I do not use them anymore because they had too many problems.

Is this for that class action lawsuit that was talked about on another site?
Is that why you need our info?

Seio 820 intank: Works fine. Going on 9 months, no problems, starts up fine.
Seio 820 mixing salt: Works fine, but has broken impeller magnet. New magnet costs $38 or so and all it does it mix salt... not worth repairing.

RIO 2500 as my return. It has been in place in my sump for almost 11 years. Yes, I am starting to get nervous when I read of failures of other Rio's. It has been working without a hitch.

In everything I've read on this site I've never seen more complaints on any other product.
I'm amazed they are still in business.
If you ask me what the worst thing you could do to your reef the first thing that comes to mind is buy a Rio!
Those who have good luck with them have just been lucky...so far
Why take the risk of complete crash?
