Wow, very beautiful! Could you tell us a little more about the tank? What kind of lighting/skimmer/sump/equipment are you running? Thanks! I'm setting up a 200g LPS and softie tank right now with T5s, and am curious what you're using. Thanks,

do you have to do anything with your zenia to keep them away from other corals. If so what do you do?

alex9421
08/19/2006, 05:41 PM
Xenia are very non aggressive corals. They pose no contact threat to any of the corals in my tank. However if then can grow over top of them they can shade them out. In those area's I just cut them back. As well as on my overfow because the plug it.

my zenias will grow all over all my hard corals and kill them i have to cut them back weekly and know i was told that can cause bad chemicals to be released.

Beautiful tank! Could you give some details on how your closed loop is set up and yes, like William said a picture of your sump would be appreciated. Also, how high off the water do you have your lights? I love the look of those 14K MH.

reefNetWork, here's some pics of my sump, it's not much to look at. I live on the 2nd floor of an old house, ideally I'd like to have the sump under the tank but because of weight concerns I had to put in a closet away from the tank. Works well, just not much to look at. The chiller is just on the right side of the sump, you can see the plumbing going to it in the second picture.

My lights (pendants) are suspended about 6 inches above the water surface, I run an open top. My tank is not drilled so my closed loop runs over the top of the tank. I use PVC as well as flexible tubing. I have 1 inlet and 2 outlets (Tee), you cannot see them because they are covered in xenia. The pump for the closed loop is under the tank.

I don't have much heat issues, mind you I keep the room with the tank at around 70 degrees in the summer with a window rattler, it's nice cause it keeps the humidity down as well. I also have a chiller as backup, but I prefer to use the a/c rather than the chiller. I'd love a bigger tank but I'm going to have to get out of this duplex before I can go bigger, otherwise I might be going through the floor LOL.

Thanks you, that finger leather is one of my favorite corals in the tank especially when all the polyps are fully extended.

wjhuie Is that a sun polyp on the glass in the top corner next to the mag float?

Yes it is, I have a colony in my coral prop tank because it is easy to feed, then one day I noticed I had sun polyps in my main tank. The colony in the sump sexually or asexually spawned at some point, I was quite happy and because of where it is, it's extremely easy to feed.

Gotta bump this for the way cool tank and ask about the ATO, I think that's what it is, what is the extra cup in the top right corner of the sump photo?

Thank you, I think ATO = automatic top off? I'm using a tunze osmolatr. The sensor is in the sump, the reservoir and pump is under the main tank and pumps top off water up to the tank. The extra cup is used to hold effluent from the calcium reactor so the pH can be monitored and the CO2 entering the reactor controlled.

tangreef68 Have you had any trouble with the two clown gobies and your sps?

I've read in forums that some people have noticed their gobies nipping at the sps polyps. Although my gobies don't do that, I think I was getting larger polyp extension while the lights were on before I added them, can't say for sure. I think becuase they are constantly moving between the branches it causes decreased polyp extension, but doesn't appear to have had any adverse affects on the colonies. At night the polyps are fully extended. They are great fish, IMO they are a great addition to a reef setup.

Thanks everyone,

Alex
