EDIT: got a definite ID for you on that gorgonian:

Its Acabria Spp. native of Borneo Malaysia, as far a i know. I would be 99% sure it is an obligate filter feeder that requires low lighting and moderate to high pulsed or alternating currents. Ensure no algae NB. cyano gets on the skeleton whatsoever. Feed it Cyclop-eeze, baby brine, marine snow, phyto/zoo etc. the usual filter feeding foods

Thanks
They are pricier than other Gorgonians I've seen but since this is the first time seeing this type I want to give it a try....

Just edited with care instructions above. IMHO it will be a tough specimin, feed daily to every two days with the filter feeding food gently sprayed onto the polyps or into the incoming current so it can sift out the particles. One thing ive learnt, NEVER allow algae to foul the skeleton, the polyps will retract and its demise will come soon after. Hence the need for low light and high flow to keep it clear. Beautiful species, i'd suspect a deepwater specimin - perhaps put it under an overhang and direct current off a wall or hard surface near it to stimulate turbulent chaotic flow

Do you think it would do OK near a spot where I have a purple rod shaped (pinnate branching form) Goni....the purple one is growing....
They were hand picked by the LFS owner....

Is this the gorgonian you have?

Im presuming if it is this it hosts zooxanthellae in its tissues? (Assumed species is Muriceopsis flavida)

It should be fine IMHO, as long as you shade the Acabria gorgonian to a greater extent than the purple one and provide enough spaxe to grow and expand comfortably. Thos purple branched gorgonians are fast growing from what i know and you will need to take care that it doesnt crowd out the new addition. Chemically, i dont know of any adverse effects of keeping them in close proximity

I just picked up a similar goni. My is yellow on the body with red polyps. Yours seems to have yellow polyps on yellow body and red polyps on red body. LFS said it was photosynthetic and it has really polyped out in my tank. I have mine in a cove next to the cavern where the wavebox pulses by every few seconds. 400 watts MH must penetrate 20 inches but that seems fine so far.

Sounds like Gorgonia sp. if it hosts zooxanthellae

If it looks like this:

or this:

http://www.optiquatics.com/gallery/images/Gorgonian.jpg

it is a gorgonia spp. however i have a hunch that yours could be this:

http://www.thegoldfishbowl.co.uk/atlas/a-gorg-uw-051.jpg

this is in fact is Subergorgia Aprossa which i think is indeed a symbiont of zooxanthellae which would explain its growth under lighting. 400W goes pretty deep!

BTW Acabria is not photosynthetic as far as i know.
