View Full Version : Skimming on Hypo Tank
I'm running a hypo-salinity tank to remove ich and was wondering if I can use a skimmer on the hospital tank? No meds will be used but I heard somewhere that running a skimmer on 1.009 salinity affects the SG level? Is this true? Is it not safe to run an established skimmer?
does anyone know at all? Thanks.

No you should be fine might not produce allot of skimmate though.

Are you sure you didn't hear it the other way around? That low SG makes the skimmer less efficient? I know they don't work well in FW but I don't know if a SG of 1.009 is enough to allow bubbles to form.

I could see having a skimmer on a holding tank but not in a QT tank where hypo takes place. A powerfilter does the job on a QT tank.

You dont need a skimmer on the Qt tank since Qt tanks shouldnt be Stocked with a lot of fish. As said a power filter is fine. The only thing that a qt tank could use is a uv sterilizer.
right now my QT is overstocked with fish though as there was an ich breakout in my main tank and needed all the fish to be on hypo. I'm changing water every other day as the QT/hypo tank is operpopulated right now and will be for 6 weeks. Thats why I was wondering if skimming is a possibility for that duration.

You can always give it a try, it will either work or it won't. Even if it doesn't work, it will add much needed oxygen to the overcrowded tank.
If you're also using meds to treat your fish, you may not want to use the skimmer for awhile after dosing, as it may remove the meds.
