I have had a Rio Taam 1700 in my aquarium for almost 4 months and im starting to get scared from all these posts about disasters. What is a good replacement with about 900gph flow and it has to be less then 3 inches wide on one side? I was considering a gen X or little giant external pump but it is next to my head when I sleep so noise is a factor.

I dont think I ever posted a pic of my reef on RC so here is one

Does the pump have to be external? I find my submersible quiet one pump to be very quiet. I cannot even hear the pump over the gurgling of my overflow.

Not sure about the size of this one but have you looked at an Eheim 1262?

I like sedras or mags for internal use and Gen-X for external.

I'd vote for Eheim. Low power, very reliable, very quiet.

One guy posts a bad experience with a Rio, and all of a sudden, everyone remembers their own horror stories. IMHO, the negative publicity about Rios exploding and etc is a bit over hyped. Look around, and you'll find five satisfied users of Rio for every unsatisfied one. There were indeed problems with Rio before, but they have been corrected. Still, if you must switch pumps, an Eheim 1262 with 898 GPH would be a good alternative. They're quiet, reliable and energy efficient than most other pumps in the same class.

Nuked my tank once...shame on Rio
Nuke my tank Twice....Shame on ME

Don't take a risk - go with a Mag-Drive or Sedra

PS - I've had my Mag 9.5 for almost 5 yrs now... still running fine.
The Rio that nuked my tank..... ran for less than a year then poof

ehiem or if you want to go external poseidens are unbeatable for silence. I sleep in the same room as mine and I cant even hear it.

Thanks for all the replies, the Eheim 1262 sounded perfect except for the fact that its 4.6 inches wide. Looks like im going to get an external and that poseidon looks great, If it is as quiet as you say im going to order it.
