Whats the point of calling it BB when it's obviously the Berlin Method ;)

clkwrk
08/23/2006, 09:49 PM
I guess because its actually modified berlin ;)

King-Kong
08/23/2006, 09:49 PM
Because the 1970s didnt have the same type of pumps and protein skimmers that we do today? BB asks that you create even more flow and rock-arrangement to accept that flow than typical berlin methods alloted for.

Heck, most Berlin tanks of old just replaced bioballs with live rock in their sumps -- this is frowned upon in BB.

Obviously BB has its roots in the Berlin method, but newer technology and further appreciation of several attributes have allowed it to be called Berlin 2.0, or BB :P

That extra live rock is probably not necessary to maintain your biological filtration, and chances are your sump doesnt experience the same flow rates as your display. This lack of flow means detritus is settling on/in/under that live rock, and you arent getting a chance to remove it from the system.

That's what happens most of the time, so the general consensus is, just get rid of it.

Hey clkwrk,

In your last picture above I noticed there are some areas where hose meets a fitting without a clamp. Eventhough the water is flowing "out" from the fitting into the hose, I suggest getting a clamp on there. I had a similar setup and after over a year the tube flew off. The hose gets rigid after a while and doesnt "hold on" as tight. Just trying to save you from a potential headache down the road.

jackson6745
08/27/2006, 04:43 PM
Thanks Jorge!

Chin the lighting is 2 250w BLV 10k's + 3 VHO actinics. The colors are not the result of solely using this lighting. A balance in my photoperiod length and nutrient level give me the right amount of "deepness" in color, without being brown. I would have had more to show for it than my current setup if I didn't lose so many corals to AEFW and exploded pumps :(

When I get around to setting up its replacement I'm going to something very similar except the new tank will be six feet front to back instead of four like the old one and I plan on trying to force the viewers perspective to try and create a feeling of endlessness. We'll see how that works out. It works in my head.:p

Also I managed to save everything and still have quite a bit in a tank waiting for its new home.

I agree with you entirely. I love the look of a tank with substrate. My sole decision to go with and STICK with barebottom *or Berlin 2.0 for the purists* was to get a TON of flow that you could never do with a tank with substate. Dart closed loop, 2 6100's, 1 6200 and a wave box and still adding! All of the pumps are pushing maximum capacity and there are still dead spots:mad2:

Rich your tank looks really nice! It is a great feeling to know what you've got when you've defeated/overcome problems.

Travis: I really like your tank. Actually I appreaciate it more knowing what you have gone thru!

Sweet! You gotta get keith to get on the stick and modify all of your MJ's to look like Tunze's with all that modeling you did for him:lol:

Um,, I have a 1200 Mod.. its like a freggin tsunami in my tank with it.Ever wondered what 1000GPH turnover with an additional 1800 GPH looks like in a 40 Breeder? LOL!!!!!!

I just finished putting it together tonight.. its on a wave timer even though most say dont do it... I gotta get a bigger tank.. SOON .....Glad my water line is 2 inchs below the top of the tank or it would be flowing over from the rapid current swells . No more modeling.. Im done for the year.LOL

Nice tanks can i see some more sumps to? I need ideas for mine. You see i took out the bio balls for live rock and now i have removed the live rock so i have a megaflow model 4 with only my coralife 125 super skimmer in it. The sump is so empty i need ideas.

Looking great Chris! For some reason I thought you have been BB longer than that. Also, didn't know you upgraded. It looks nice. You must have done some fragging when you moved the corals over or do they just look smaller in the bigger tank?

Awsome Chris.... You have your maxi's running full blast all the time or you alternating them?

Thanks guys:D

I had been SSB for a while trying to live the BB lifestyle with the look of sand:lol: I ended up fragging things quite a bit and removing several large colonies before I moved to make things easier.

The MJ's are just run all the time. I had read that the mods don't do well switching. If they do it wouldn't be hard to plug them into my AC III. Anyone had luck running them on a wavemaker?

thanks, Chris

Im testing a MJ1200 mod on a wave maker. so far 4 days running and no issues, and honestly i dont mind when it spins in reverse.. When it first came on i could beleive how much CRAP came outta my rocks.. then when it reversed it put everything back into suspension.. SPS are loving it ..... Of course im running this thing on a 40 breeder.. so 1600 GPH ball parking current is insane.. thank god my water line is 2 inches below the top of the tank....

When you say balanced, do you mean you run a shorter than usual photoperiod along with a slght level of No3?

I run 3.5 hours photo with 5-7ppm No3. I am thinking along the same lines as you I think

It's ok I guess. It skims just as well as a Deltec but I still miss my beckett:(

which deltec is the question ;)

(I want to get the BX-3 badly, but im not quite 100% sold -- other option would be saving $300 and getting an ASM G4x; single sedra9k).

Thanks, the tanks been running for about a 1.5 years but 11 months in the new house. Most of the sps were added to the system after the move. Thanks to copps for the awesome frags that are really starting to take off now And a couple small colonies from the LFS.
