hi guys i have a customer who is requesting that i set up his reef tank with an undergravel filter. he said he was doing some reading and found out about them. i tried as hard as i could to think of reasons to install one for him but couldnt come up with a single pro, many cons just no pros. What is the upside of an undergravel filter?

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM NONE. The books he is reading are way outdated. Explain to him that things have changed since the book was written and that there are much better ways of filtration. IE: Skimmer in a sump with a fuge

Yeah, they're cheap... and they do have a large nitrtifying surface area... and you get to have fun vacuuming them out...
Wait that sounds like more work... I like my low-maintenance nassarius snails :)
I'll always pick LR and SSB + DSB fuge for now, unless some other major revolution comes along.
