Yes, the white tips are dead tissue. I would cut these off with a clean, sharp blade, scissors, whatever. Just do not take it out of the water to do so. Always keep it completely submerged.

Most sponges don't require light. And the light is only detrimental if it causes nuisance algae to grow on the sponge.

Are you feeding it..... aren't sponges heavy filter feeders?

Ok.....I think that type of sponge also prefers very good flow and low light.
