K i am in the middle of setting up a couple tanks.

By the time i am done setting up a 45 corner, a 40 breeder and a 20 long i am working out in my head that i am spending around $2500.

Which isnt to bad but i plan to luck for some fellow reefers getting out of the hobby, or look in the forums for some of my equipment.

I am interested to see what other peole spent on the setup they have now.

Just the one you had now or just sold, because everybody jas had more then one tank in the past couple years.

Cant wait to see some ppl's replys.

Sorry if it brings a sharp pain to the back pocket.

Hmm from the top of my head about R100,000 or ROUGHLY USD 9,500 taking customs and shipping into account.

About $3,500 setting up my 46 gal and roughly $2,000 setting up my 20L...and those are just my start up costs for my two most recent tanks (I won't even talk about all the others). Then add up the 17 years of roughly $50/mo expenses incurred...I could do the math, but I really don't want to know the answer! This is why I don't have that extra $2 a month for RC membership!

Hi,

Since I have counted...January of 2005, my ongoing expenses have been $350 a month average, not including electrical.

Enjoy your tanks while they're of reasonable size and still somewhat affordable my fellow reefkeepers.

Because once the big tank bug bites you pretty much stop counting numbers with commas in them, and start sweating over how many places you are to the left of the decimal.

$1,200 so far, since June! I still need to make a sump (looking into DIY with rubbermaid...but need more info..), a lighting system, about 100lbs more of live rock, and my inverts!

So far I just have the 50g tank and stand combo, and my 150 hqi pendant. I do have everything layed out and added up in a spreadsheet. It comes to about $3500 including all of my fish, corals, and inverts.......(unless I have bad luck and need to replace lots of livestock and coral.

About $600 for my 80gal over 3 months... so far. I think I have been pretty thrifty in my setup. $150 for the tank new, $150 for the Halide/VHO fixture used, homemade skimmer, homemade sump, used rocks from someone on RC, used RO/DI... Hell, mostly used corals! Live stock and electricity is what will get me overtime, I think.

2k in a 65 gal

I had $1400 in my 30gal.

My new tank:

75gal reef ready SeaClear System II acrylic - $150 used (Integrated wet/dry compartments make a great refugium with 20lbs of rubble and chaeto, no worry about ever overflowing)

SeaClear integrated skimmer - $85

2 Power Sweep 220 PHs - $50

100lbs 6yr old coraline and star polyp encrusted LR - $100 used

260w Marineland PCs - $200

60lbs of CaribSea LS - $60

So, $645 and I have all major components. Not bad!

PS: Craigslist is the only way to buy a tank and liverock. Print out price lists off Petsmart/Petco before you shop in the store, you average a 40-50% discount.

I kept track of every penny and then stopped counting after I hit the $4500 mark. That includes everything up through about 2 years of operation.

It is staggering when you start to add things up. I think I have spent close to $4000.00 on the tank I have now.

I think I'm about $4000 with my 120gal up to this point and I have almost all of my equipment. Only things I'm going to add are CA Reactor and Ozone so there's another $600 in a couple months

In the past three years I think I've spent around $7000,00 on equiptment and livestock (from LFS,craigslist, ebay), on my 155 if I paid full LFS prices- 12k.
