View Full Version : Clownfish just died, should I leave him?
My clown of 4 yrs died today. I was feeding some prime reef angel formula to my tang and angel and he choked on a piece. I tried to revive him and he looked better for about 1 hr and then he died 2 hrs later. My Q is should I leave him for my large brittle stars tonite?

I gave mine a proper "flushing".

That would be ok but remove anything leftover after 24 hours.
man are you serious? I've never seen or heard a fish "choke" and die. Maybe he drowned?

Fish can drown. I dont know about clowns but FW bettas need to come to the surface to get some oxygen, it might be a similar situation with clowns. If he injested a peice of food that was to big he could get it stuck in his throat and die.

And No i would definetly NOT leave him in there. I give all my fish that die a funeral, not a flushing.

When one of my clowns died earlier this year, I stuck him on top of a giant hairy mushroom. In about 60 seconds, it was gone. He spit out the thin remains a couple days later.

My chalkbass chokes all the time. he will grab a hunk of pellet that is too big and i see him almost like yawning untill the hunk of food flies out.

Oh come on tree huggers. Leave him in there for a dinner for the others. What's the big deal? Oh yeah, you're right, all fish on the reefs are flushed down a toilet or buried in the back yard when they die. My bad.

I wouldnt be worried about being humane Freed. I would be worried about the decomposition though, depending on the tank size anyways.

If you can get the corpse out easily, do so. If not, they're not called the clean up crew for nothing.

Sorry to hear about your fish. Was it frozen food that it choked on?

My tiny neon goby grabs pieces of food half his size and takes them down to nibble, i hope he doesnt choke....

Shouldn't hurt a thing in a 75 if you leave it in there.
It was a sponge formula that is made for angelfish. He did choke, He was coughing for awhile and I didn't know what was wrong. I looked up later and he was in the overflow. I pulled him out and saw the food, pulled that out with a paperclip. Too late I guess.

I've left fish in my tank after they died with no problems. As long as teh tank is established, have plenty of pods, and a good clean up crew, it should be gone in a about 2 days. Sorry about you clown
