I run mine when the tank lights are off, to help offset ph changes due to oxygen releases by the algae. For about 2 years I've used one of the mini compact fluourescent fixtures with 1x9 watts of 6000K lamp mounted against a side (for convenience) of the glass 'fuge. The macro algae grows well in a ball about 7" in diameter.
Now, I want more power so I've just ordered a 2x9watt fixture including two lamps on sale for $22.99 at DrsFosterSmith.com
