View Full Version : EDTA myths vs facts?

Is there any scholarly paper that assesses the bioaccumulation of EDTA? I was researching some different salt mixes and came across a retailer's website that noted that EDTA bioaccumulates in SPS over time and will eventually kill them. I know that many of the commercial salt mixes contain this additive. I did a Google Scholar search for 'EDTA bioaccumulate' and got 1 hit that wasn't really relevant. I also found the MSDS for EDTA which stated "EDTA is not expected to bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms, adsorb to suspended solids or sediments or volatilize from water surfaces. " Is there any study that establishes weather or not EDTA does or does not bioaccumulate? I know from my 1 graduate level course in Toxicity and from professional experience dealing with hazardous materials that bioaccumulation regardless of documented negative consequences is almost always considered 'bad'. Whats the verdict on EDTA? Thanks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDTA

I think it will hurt DNA via heavy metal build up, if I interpret the info right.

Try not to say the word Aqaucraft or I will stop posting :D

Well thats what I'm trying to figure out. It struck me as odd, since so many salt mixes contain this additive. Thanks for the links. The EU report was very informative. Definitely some good info in there. One statement did jump out at me that tends to nullify the statement of the vendor that I posted earlier.

"In the frame of the marine risk assessment there is no scenario for intermittent release available. As there are no valid test results with marine organisms available, it is proposed..."

So in their literature review they found no tests of EDTA effects on marine organisms. I'm starting to doubt the vendor more and more...(like that is a surprise).

It was a seahorse vendor and they were pushing Reef Crystals salt mix. I was actually looking for something else and that remark kept nagging me.
