We have some really cool new substrate from South Pacific. Imported it all the way from around the world. It's a dry aragonite sand, comes in 3 flavors and is amazing on looks. Very clean crisp natural sand with some specs of red/pink color. Can't tell from the photos, but if you seen this in person and compared to the other brands, it's a huge difference.

It's really nice stuff, check out at the link below, also they have calcium reactor media.

Jason,

Which would be the best grain size for a bed depth of 1 inch to 1.5 inches in a small tank of 20 with MI rock?

Hi,

If you only want 1 to 1 1/2 inches, i would use the Aragasnow because it's super sugar fine and would stil denitrate a little, unless you just don't like the real fine sand look. Far as looks, i like the mini flakes but everyone has different taste on the look.

Hi,

Sorry the shipping is so high for you, are you pretty far away from Indiana? Unfortuanately we can't control the shipping cost, we charge the exact rate plus $1.00. It gets expensive though since it's such a heavy item.

I'm in Northern VA

How does (removed vendor name) do it?

CD-967052 Aragamax Sand (30 lbs) $21.99 x 10 = $219.90
Subtotal = $219.90
Standard (Within 7 Business Days) $14.99
Expedited (2-4 Business Days) $298.35
FedEx 2 Day Air (2 Business Days) $433.59
FedEx Std. Overnight Air (Next Business Day) $768.47

Premium Aquatics:

C-ARAG-SELT Carib Sea Aragamax Select Sand 30 lb 10 $19.95 Total $199.50
Ship Via:
UPS Ground ($164.99)
UPS 3 Day Select ($307.36)
UPS 2nd Day Air ($346.59)
UPS Next Day Air Saver ($762.33)
UPS Next Day Air ($818.20)

You guys are BY FAR my preferred vendor, but...cant spend that kind of coin on shipping. I'll probably see if the LFS can get me the sand. I would look into FedEx and see if you can get better rates on bulky items.

Hi,

The other vendor is basically taking a loss to sell the product. The large places often use that strategy to try an keep there share of the market place. Smaller places just can't afford to take a loss hoping to make it up in the future and often the larger places don't make it either. Take *pets(can't remember exact).com many years ago. Offered Instant Ocean buckets for 35 bucks including shipping. They lost millions of dollars by one doing too much advertising and giving away the product to try and gain market share.

On our sand, we only make around 2 bucks a bag on the 30lb size, so there just isn't any room in there for eating the freight, but I can certainly understand you can't pay that kind of price and I wouldn't expect you too either. Sometimes if you need a lot, going with the LFS is the way to go, or taking advantage of a larger places shipping deals like that.
