I have been battling hair algae at the top of my overflows(i understand why, that it is a place of high nutrients). I just did a clean up of it and decided to try an experiment. Not sure if anyone else has tried it, but i took some of the chateo out of my HOB refuge and put some in 2 media bags and placed one near the top of each overflow(inside) hoping that it will give the hair algae more competition. I will just have to monitor the growth of the macro more due to the higher intensity lights.

Any negatives to this that u see?

Please let us know how this works out. Photos of how you arranged this would be interesting also.

The only potential negatives I can see are it falling and clogging your overflow somehow. If it is in a media bag it might not be getting as much light from your lights as you might think, but probably still plenty.

thanks for the reply...i think this type of experiment will take some time to see if it worked. Of course in the meantime i plan on working on other parameters that lead to the hair algae in the 1st place.
