shallow tank or tub.
easy.....
pc, t-5, t-5 ho, vho.
cheap and easy ballasts.
bare bottom, lots of rubble to split onto.
medium water flow with overflow/drain into sump/fuge setup.

i would think you can set this up for about $100 rather easily. the lights will be the tricky part of the cost.

what would be the most versatile ballast? Icecap or do you recommend somthing else?

depends on what you really want to go with.
yes ice cap is the most versatile as they can fire a broader range of bulbs.
if you just want to go flourescent route then workhorse seems to be the next choice.

^^ im addicted to ricordias after i started fragging them

really anything will work for them
once my systems auto top off arives in the mail i will be moving my ricordias into a 75 gallon tank ( 1/2 filled) with one 200 gph quiet one pump always on and a 2nd one that i willl turn on when there are no newly glued frags ( dont wanna blow them off the rock)

how are you with getting htem to attach ? method i use is to take an old carbon filter bag and put it over the polyps and tie it to a rock. most seem to attach within a few days altho i cant seem to get my oarnge rics to attach ( just lost one a few minutes ago into my display somewhere because it came unattached shortly after removing the mesh bag... :(

Try putting them in a bowl or glass with sand on the bottom, cover it with netting. Within about 8-10 hrs. they attach to the sand, then you can glue them to some rubble.

www.ahsupply.com is great and cheap for their retro pc kits, plus they offer 6700k bulbs as well.

When you frag ricordia, do you slice it through the mouth? or just slice it in half avoiding the month? Is it better to leave a mouth on each frag?

TIA

I have T5 HO's, and I bought a blue ricordea, and it bleached...was my lighting too high, or too low? Which rics could be kept under halides? T5 HO's?

I also have T5 HO, 6 X 39w over 46 gallon tank, and they were purchased from a MH tank. They are all placed on the sandbed. My ricordias are all doing well, never bleached or not opening, at least doubled their sizes in few months, that's why I wanted to frag them. :D

Are you talking about ricordea florida? I heard that different color morphs have different lighting requirements. The one that bleached was blue. I have 216 watts total over my 75.

Mine are orange with purple skirts. I have not heard of different color ricordia needing different lighting requirements. I have seen LFS and fellow reefers placing all colors of ricordia together, mostly on the sandbed, under MH, T-5s, even PC, just like mushrooms and zoas. Mine came from a MH tank, was placed under PCs, then T-5s.

Only thing I can think of is when I upgraded my lighting from 4 X 96W pc to 6 X 39W T-5 the ricordia initially didn't open up as big as they were under the pcs. I had some corals bleaching at that time, but the ricordias never did. However, it didn't take long for them to open up to their normal sizes once they are adjusted to the lighting.

If yours bleach, you might want to find them some shade, bleaching is usually due to too much light, unless it is stress related. Give it some shade and it'll recover in time.

Hope this helps.

Well, I already gave it to a fellow reefer with lower lighting, lol, but i'll get some in my frag tank.
