This is my 40 breeder, it been up and running since late July 06. Most of the stuff was transfer from my 8 month old 30 gal.

Tank Spec.
50 lbs live rock
2" sand bed
Aquaclear 70 hob filter for carbon, rowaphos, and extra flow
Seio 320, and Maxijet 1200 for flow
Excalibur hob skimmer with maxijet 1200 mod.
36" Nova Extreme 4x39 T5

Fish List
1 Bi-color Blenny
1 Percula clown
1 Purple Firefish
1 Yellow Watchman
1 Exquisite Wrasse
1 Carpenter Wrasse
1 Cleaner Shrimp
1 Peppermint Shrimp
12 Mix hermit
2 Mexican Turbo
20 Mix snail

I'm very happy with my set up, but I'm sure there can be improvement. For one I want to up grade to the Tek T5 fixture (Waiting to find a good deal on the for sale forum) since I want to have more SPS corals, and a clam, then maybe the skimmer (have to be a hob type). So please tell what you guys/girl think of my set up, and what do you think will make it better. Thanks for looking.

Looks great.

I've got a 40 that I've had running for a couple of years now myself as well.

I will say that aside from just the lights, you will need to upgrade the flow if you want to get into SPS heavily, especially when those SPS colonies start to grow in. Another thing that you may want to consider is that a lot of softies release toxins into the water to ward off other corals like SPS. I only have SPS and zoa's in my tank so I dont run into this problem so much, but I would look into keeping mixed reefs with leathers and maybe some of your other soft corals before getting too far into the SPS.

It really does look good though. I especially like the aquascaping that you've done so far. Best of luck to you with growing everything out.

Jmkins I do plan to up my flow with the Nanostream once they are available. The tank is going to be mix with SPS,LPS, and afew zoo. I already started trading my softies, so it won't be to long before they are all gone. Thanks for the advice.

wow! when my 40 breeder grows up, i want it to be just like yours! :)

I love how the 40 breeders have a good front-to-back distance. It allows you to have plenty of rock, and yet still have tons of swimming space, unlike my 55. I've only got 60 lbs of rock in my 55 and theres hardly any room from the rock to the front glass.

how much did your light cost you? It looks like its doing a good job. I dont know what i want for lighting on mine...so far i've only got a 2x96 pc but i wanna go MH or t5 down the road.

Sir_dudeguy I'm glad that you like it. I'm suprise that there aren't that many people doing 40 breeder, like you said the 40 is deep enough to do some amazing aquascaping, and still leave room for the fish to swim. Almost everything in the tank was frag, and the light did an outstanding job with growth, and color. If I didn't plan to do SPS I won't up grade the light. Oh the light was only $200, it as a fan, 3 moonlight, and two power cord for the lights.

Are 40 gal breeder consider nano?

I thought nanos were 29 and under. Tanks looks great by the way! Does the Seio kick up the sand at all?

Quis

The Seio dosen't kick up the sand at all. If the Tunze Nanostream wasn't coming out I whould but another one.

Are 40 gal breeder consider nano?

no. IMO, it should only be called a nano if its 24 or less...but thats only because the nano cubes make a 24g version, so everyone's gonna call those nanos. Otherwise i'd say 15. But 40 wouldnt be a nano for sure. I dont like when people post pics of their 80 gallon tanks in the nano forums either lol

quis

i'm also surprized that more people dont get 40 breeders. I personally hate the regular 40's (they're even worse than 55's!) but the breeders are awsome. I've had mine for over 5 years or so, but it was always a freshwater tank. I'm fed up with how little you can do with freshwater tanks tho lol, so its halfway converted to salt now...i just need more live rock in there before i start getting livestock...well...and a light too. I've got a light, tho i dont know how long that'll hold up lol...it was an old jebo light that had 2x96 and 2x65 in the same fixture...the 2x65 melted and i salvaged the 2x96 and put the balast and reflectors on a seperate NO fixture that came w/the 40.

and where'd you get the light from? How good is it and everything? I'm very interested in that, but i'd probably have to get it used but i dont mind getting used stuff.

Sir-dudeguy I got the light fixture from Premium Aquatics 5 months ago for $215 shipped. I really like the light a lot it kept my LPS, Zoos, Softies, and the two SPS frags that I have happy. The only reason I'm up grading is because I want to change it to a SPS tank with afew clams. I'm trying to get the Tek T5 fixture within 2-3 weeks if you want I can let you have it for $100 plus shipping.

The best thing about the 40 breeders it that it not too big, and not too small.

tank looks good,

I just set mine up, gotta love the 36" long but the 18" deep.

You should get the coralife hqi fixture, i grabbed the 150hqi and 2/65 watt actinics w/2 moonlights....love the fixture but you could even get the 250 is you wanted.

I got this for a awesome deal, cost me $200.

But the tanks looks good, i got a sump on mine tho.

You like the sieo??

have 2-820's on the way for the tank. ill post some pics once i get the camera up.

Stsonpers I love the Seio, I was going to get another one until I found out about the Tunze Nanostream that's coming out next month. If you don't mind can you tell me where you got your fixture from(that was really a good deal)? Do you have any pics of your tank? I would love to see it.

I would also love to see pics! I need idea's for my 40 breeder. I'm thinking i'll get the rock to pile up at the back and go for some height with the rock...then just leave the front for open swimming room. I'll have some fungia plates prolly, and any other sand-dwelling coral...what should i do for fish? I love flame angels...i know its hit or miss with them and i think i'm gonna risk it (if 40 breeder is large enough...imo it should be..) But what else? I'm thinkin maybe some little guys..how do all your blennies and gobies get along?

Ill post pics in a day or so, i am waiting to get the camera back.

I got the lighting from a local reefer, that why it was such a good deal.

I definatly reccommend the ligthing to anyone.

I am not sure if its enough to keep all sps and get the wanted colors.

So i am setting up a 45 corner with a k 400watt halide pendent on there, to make sure i can keep anything and gte all types of colors between both tanks.

Nice job Quis!!

My first reef was a 40 breeder. It is a very well proportioned tank as mentioned earlier...lots of room for aquascaping and you really cashed in on that.

Keep us posted!!
