Honestly I would do both the sump and fuge together to make a sump/fuge.
You can have both with a undrilled tank by using a U tube overflow box to drain water from the tank into the sump/fuge.
Here are some pics of my plumbing with my sump and fuge.
Here is my sump/fuge

Here is my U tube overflow from the back and the closed loop plumbing with a SCWD.(optional)

You don't need a fancy container for your sump/fuge, but it helps conserve space. All you need to know about sump building is on melev's site.
Like Blown says, you'd just need a hang-on overflow box to get the water from your tank down to the sump/refugium, and a return pump to get the water back to your reef. The hangon overlfows look like this:

There are some that come without a U-tube but I recommend the one with the U-tube.

Shagsbeard, no offense, but U tube is WAY better IMO.
With U-tube you don't need any kind of pump to remove air from the tube because water flows alot faster in the tube and air bubbles don't get accumulated when installed properly.
The ones without the U-tube can be all right if the aqua-lifter pump is used correctly with it, but the overflows with the U-tube are really trouble-free and don't fail with years of use. They are reliable whenever the sump/tank circulation is turned off for feedings, electrical outages, etc. So, I have to ask, why ever go with the other kind?
