View Full Version : Which causes more nitrates ... flake food or frozen food

... of course the frozen food is thawed and the excess liquid is strained out. Still which one will cause more nitrates after feeding?
My pure guess is flake. I don't feed flake, do feed frozen, and don't thaw it, and don't have a nitrate problem. Phosphate is another issue.

Not really but I feed frozen with the juice left over in the tank. I figured that something in the tank will make use of that juice or my skimmer gets the best of it. No problems here.

I feed strictly frozen and occasional live foods. I thaw the frozen out in some Kent Zoe before feeding. I don't strain or drain anything from the mix and all seems happy. My Nitrates are usually <10ppm and Phosphate are undetectable. I only change 2 gallons of water a couple or three times a week and have no cyanobacteria or nuisance algae problems.
The only odd thing is that Ocean Nutrition foods seem to make the foam head in my skimmer collapse for a few hours, then it's business as usual...or it may be the Kent Zoe...haven't experimented and figured it out yet.

I would think that feeding some of the processed flake foods would increase phosphates have not read about any relation to Nitrates.
I am sure some of the more knowledgeable will chime in.

Wierd.
Prime reef flakes make my skimmer go volcanic.

Flake food over frozen food

Flake definately increases PO4. I think if you have an established tank, the minimal amount of nitrates that either food would contribute to the tank is immediately consumed by bacteria.
