Just bought a 175 watt MH retrofit light for my enclosed canopy. I have a mirror reflector for it. My question is, do I need some sort of cover over the bulb to filter the rays of the bulb? If so, is this for the benefit of the fish, or for anyone viewing the tank? Also, if so, where can I get one? Can I do without it?

Thank you for your support!!

if it is a DE bulb, yes. if a SE no.

DE=double ended. SE= single ended.

Thanks! But what is the reason, single vs. double ended? For my own knowledge?

Thanks again!!

Also, single ended or double ended, yes to which of my questions?
Can I do without, or do I need a filter?

Thanks!

The outside part of an SE bulb IS the outer shield.
The DE has no such protection - so you need to put one over it.
