Why the mantis bashing? The vast majority never harm anything except the occasional small snail. I've got a hitchhiking mantis in my 250g tank, and we still see him from time to time almost 18 months later. As long as he's not hurting anything, I don't see any reason to remove him. They're actually pretty interesting critters.

BUT, the question is... Would you buy one for 20 dollars? Probably not...

Some species are exceptionally beautiful, and make stunning species tank displays. So yes, I would. In fact, a LFS has one that is a brilliant canary yellow.
I would if I had an empty tank in a second!
Check out the mantis forum.

Thats a pretty good price, but thats not a peacock. Peacocks cost alot more! Someday I will actually get around to setting up a species tank for one. Mantis rule!

My hitchhiker mantis shrimps (yes, i know. i'm multiply-blessed) were bashing the heck out of my hitchhiking barnacles. As I think the barnacles are super cool little critters, this was bad news. Occassionally I'd see dead barnacle bodies floating through the water column, ripped out of their shells. Grrr. But I agree, mantis shrimp have super cool personalities, and the coloring really varies. I've had electric green and rust red primarily. I'd love to keep one if I wasn't worried about it killing off other inverts.
I've had 2, the small hitchiker kind. They are awesome little guys.

Ditto for me - last count was about 7-8 of the small hitchhiker kinds... Very cool. I try and feed them enough so that they leave the other creatures alone, and so far it seems to be paying off.

I'd buy one in a second if my wife would let me setup another tank :)
