How often and how long should you leave active carbon in your tank?

I use carbon 24/7. I change it once a month. This works for me.

I've done the same in the past as well. Don't have any in right now, but didn't have any problems when I ran 24/7.

The only problems associated with carbon, is:

-the potential to release phopate
-when full can put organics trapped inside it back in the water.

Otherwise, its pretty much good to change it every 2 weeks to a month. Most reefers use protein skimmers that essentially act the same way as carbon does. Some choose to use both because skimmers cant remove everything carbon can. Such as tannis from bacterial properties which yellow water.

But you can get around the yellowing effect by using devices such as ozoneirs wich break down molecules. All it cost you is a little electricity .

Most deemed upon carbon is Black Diamond brand. Because it has the least phosphate release compared to most brands.
