I have my tunze running on half power and on a high low controler. my question is i have it on the left side with the flow going right down the middle of the tank . Shoud i have it on the back wall faxing the front glass on somewhat of an angle so my corals are not directly in the flow? only one was in direct flow the way it is and i had to move it . my concern is once they grow and get bigger they will grow up to the main flow of the tunze . or by they will they get used to it .. thanks for any advice..

A 30 gal tank is wayyy too small for an sps tank, a 250 watt mh will heat your water to extreme, I hope you have a chiller.
A tunze 6100 is good for pushing water over 6 feet, not 2-3

Get a bigger tank.

I have once coral that would take up all the space in a 30 gal

I too think a tunze 6100 is a bit big for a 30gal tank, you would be much better off going with a couple of Sieos...
However, I've got to strongly dissagree that a 30gal is too small to have as an SPS tank...it's a lot more challanging that a 225gal or something like that, but can still be very enjoyable. Just think of keeping it like a group of bonsi trees...you have to keep their growth in line...so you end up with lots of frags.

Ditto on the tank size its totally doable. However the tunze is a bit big for it (I know how ya feel, I like putting oversize stuff on small tanks too :D )

try placing the Tunze so that it's blast ricochets (sp?) off glass, bottom.

Sps like stability.. A 30 gal will have too much in the way of

temp swings
salinity swings
ALk and calc swings
Ph... and the list goes on....

All of the above will cause rtn, stn.. and other problems...

Get a bigger tank to start with... you will have less problems and can use your tunze 6100, tanks are cheap it is all the other equipment that is expensive.

That's not true. People keep 30g reefs all the time with stable paramaters. Is it harder than a bigger tank? Sure. Impossible? Of course not. Sweeping generalizations generally aren't that productive. And with a sump, you can easily add to the stability of a 30g.

The flow issue is going to be complicated, but when isn't it? I'd be interesting in hearing the suggestions too.

Some of these comments are so dangerous. I have a 30g SPS dominated tank that has been stable for years. I have no parameter issues and my temp doesnt exceed 80deg with a 250w MH. Yes, the Tunze is to big at this time. I would suggest that you do the best you can with Seio's and such until the Nanostreams are released next month, or the controllable ones in December. These will ultimately be your best bet.

I have a 30 gal sps tank with (2) 250 DE MH's, 110 VHO actinic and 36 T5 actinic and I dont experience any of those swings.

Just watch the flow in the corners and you should be ok.

I beg to differ. He asked for help positioning a Tunze, not an erroneous generalization.

A Tunze 6100 is way too powerful for a 30. Next month Tunze is releasing the much anticipated Nanostreams for tanks as small as 11 gallons.

Lol ...... I ran a 250w HQI over a 15g without cooking anything... some PC Fans do wonders... and a 30g tank is not too small for a sps tank. You just have to babysit it more and stay on top of things... I like the dims on a 30g ... makes for a great nano :)

It's a bit small for Tunzes though... I would shoot it into a rock pile that can take the flow, or aim it to the back wall of the tank behind the rocks

Yeah, but you can ramp up the Nanostreams to have about the same output as a 6060. But I disagree that a 6100 is too powerful for a 30g. I have two SEIO 820's in my 29G for a combined 1640gph output, yet I still want to upgrade to the controllable nanostreams. I don't even count my return's output. Those alone give me about 56x turnover and I still think I could get up to 75x without much of a problem.

The 6100 puts out 1,056 to 3,170gph and requires a controller for that function. So it is definitely not too much flow for a nano tank. If you set it to pulsing at about 20-60% and angle it towards the front glass (to minimize sand storms), it should work great. However, the only issue is that it is rather large and you might lose some valuable real estate. However if you already have it.

I plan to get a nanostream 6055 with a single controller and have it oppose one SEIO. It puts out 264-1453 Gph.

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions here about nano SPS tanks. Perhaps everyone should visit some of the threads that have been posted with pictures of our tanks? You guys will be surprised what can be done with a sub 40 gallon tank.

I too have a 250w halide with two 65w PC's and I do not run a chiller.

Agreed. I have a mag 5 return and (2) Maxi 1200 - soon to be three in my thirty.

The issue isn't the pump being to powerful but just that it's a single point source. One pump putting out 3000gph into a single location in any size tank isn't going to work well.

Best bet is 2 smaller tunze nano-streams or for the time being 2 seios (820's I'd think).

I run 2 6000's and it works great, but you need 2, 1 wouldn't do much alone.
