To have a sump/fuge (hidden) way bigger then display tank?

the real question is why?

isn't bigger better in this hobby unless keeping nano or seahorses?

Well my display tank is way nicer then my old craptastic tank which I converted to sump/fuge. 20 gal disp, 40 gal sump.

I've seen it done before, nothing wrong with it if it works for you. Anything that adds volume to the system is a good thing, and you could do a lot with that 40g. Since it's twice the size of the display, I'd be tempted to turn it into a refugium with different macroalgaes, a DSB, loads of pods... just because it's hidden most of the time doesn't mean you can't enjoy it on occasion :D

I don't think it is 'abnormal' just not the 'norm'. People like to spend their buck on the display, but more volume is always better. A 5.5 gallon nano would be better with a 10 gallon sump. A 600g with a 1000g sump would just be a lot of saltwater to mix. :D
