View Full Version : How to quiet Mag 7 pump?

Have a Mag 7 return pump in the sump which is not overly loud but would like to quiet it further. Are there any rubber feet available for these pumps or is there something else I could use that is inert to saltwater?

I just put a rubber mousepad in my sump. Put the pump on top and there is a noticable decrease in noise. Mag's are a little noisy from the vibration, just have to live with it unfortunately.

I put one of those blue algae scrubber pads under mine. Vibration solved!

I cut two pieces of 1/2" flexible hose and tie-wrapped them lengthwise to the bottom of the pump. They act like two shock absorbers. I got the idea from someone else here on RC. Instant silence--hope this helps.

After turning it on, try tipping it on it's end. They can get bubbles stuck in them causing it to cavitate. Mine was driving me bonkers until I tried that.

I see that many people post about noisy Mag pumps. I've been using them for years with nothing but great results and they're completely silent whether I plumb them wet or dry. If one's making noise, I'd suspect that the impellar shaft is either not sitting properly or cracked, so take a look.

It's just a simple fact that they will vibrate a little even when working at 100%

Peter...I have to take some issue with that....I have three going, two on my reef in the sump and one plumbed dry...for over five years...driving a CO2 unit on a planted freshwater tank and none vibrate or make any noise at all...and I mean no vibration, noise of any kind...and noise is an issue in the room all my tanks are in.

I thought all pumps make some vibration and noise.

I suppose that can be said but if the pump is operating nearby and you don't hear it and would have to get within, say a foot or less of it, I wouldn't think that's something worth making an issue of.

I have to chime in here. I just bought a mag 700 for my 54 gal corner. I have the AGA megaflow sump and dropped the mag into it for the first time today. LOADS of vibration. I have to try some of these things here ie. 1/2 in tubing or scrub pad etc... to see if that works. Otherwise, what else is there to use? Does Eheim and Quiet One really make pumps quieter than this?

My Mag 9.5 is pretty quiet (running my skimmer) but there is a slight 60Hz hum. It is definitely quieter than the Rio 2500 that sits in the same sump. Just my experience.

I think they are hit or miss on the noise. I've put mine on a rubber pad and replaced the impeller. Still makes noise. Replace it with the Eheim 1260 --- problem solved.

also make sure none of your plumbing is touching the stand or the tank, that is where alot of vibration comes from, all of my mags came with a rubber mat to put under it whitch had an adhesive

My Mag9.5 was not too bad. My Mag7 was hideous. The tank is on the main level of the house and I could hear it upstairs. Replaced it with an Eheim 1260. Connected it to the exact same plumbing and it is night and day. A ton more flow too. It does seem like the Mags are hit and miss noise wise.
