I just upgraded from a 29g tank to the current 55g tank and I’m looking for a fish to be a centerpiece of the tank. I currently have 2 percula clowns (1" and 3/4") and a yellow watchman goby (1"). I’m looking for suggestions or for people’s experiences with a good fish for this size tank that will be peaceful with the existing inhabitants. Thank you for your time.

i've got pretty much the same thing. I've got a clonw pair (tho they're more like and inch and an inch and a half) and i've got a sixline wrasse. Sixline is awsome and he schools with my clowns. I dont know how common that is tho. But just yesterday i added a diamond goby, however i wouldnt call that a "centerpiece" fish.

Maybe a flame angel?

Flame or Coral Beauty angel would be good choices. If you don't have corals, then a butterflyfish would be another choice. If you want a school rather than a single fish, then consider some anthias.

I thought that a flame angel would nip at corals? I have soft corals, zoos and anemones in this tank. It is a beautiful fish though. Any other suggestions?

While the dwarf angels are truly hit or miss with nipping at corals, they are generally ok with soft corals. They are more prone to nip at stony corals and clams.

I know several people who keep them in their reef tanks. I had a cherub/pygmy angel in my 37g reef for a year without problems. I didn't add an angel when I set it back up after moving.

What about about a mandarin ? Can you keep those in a 55?

I have both a flame and coral beauty as my "centerpiece" fish. But angels are my favortie, so I HAD to have em :)

No nipping yet, but I am prepared to lose my open brain if needed and don't plan on adding any clams. I know those are two things they tend to like.

I did, but my 55 had about 90 lbs of live rock. The more the better and if you have a refugium it will help even more. He lasted 8 months in there until I upgraded to an 80, only eating pods.

Recently he has become a real cool little fish. He is bold and not shy at all.

And I got real lucky as he just started mowing down formula pellets. I love the little guy.
