Hey fellow RCers

I got a colt frag last week and Im having trouble getting it to attach to a rock

First I used fishing line and a needle, poked it thru and fastened it to the rock. I thought everything was cool until the next day I found the colt missing! The fishing line actually worked its way thru the flesh of the coral and detached.

So then i just wrapped thinner line around the colt a few at the base between the 'branches' to the rock, and for 6 days it has not moved. I just checked it hoping to be able to cut the line, but its not attached at all, not even a little.

What am I doing wrong? Should I try an alternative method?

Thanks

try a round toothpick stuck into the rock. i just make a diagonal stab through the base, into the rock. it usually takes atleast one week.
funny that once they start dropping frags they attach instantly though!!

I place rocks or a rock on top of the section to be fraged long before, so its already attached to something when I frag. You could still try to pin the frag under a rock or in a crevice.

Guys, I will usually let the specemin sit in some aragonite for a few hours. The tissue attaches easily to it and from there it will crazy glue to scleractinian no prob...Cheers

UPDATE

My previous method of the string around the rock holding the colt down isnt working either - that too is cutting into the flesh..

so I tried another method, which I think i might have doomed my colt...I know there's a way with toothpicks, so I got one, snipped the pointy end off, glued that to a small rock with the point up, and stuck the colt on it..

The problem is, I used a WOODEN toothpick...how bad is that? After I did it i read around and realized i probably should have used a plastic one. Im afraid if I mess with it anymore, its going to die.

Help!

The best method for me was to use a rubberband over a section of the stalk holding it against the rock, but not real tight. it will take a couple of weeks.

Colts (Alcyonium or Cladiella) don't drop branches, Capnella (Kenya Tree) does.

Colts are hard because they are slimy. A wide rubber band looped through a V branch and rock should work. But, it takes time.

Best of luck,

Roy
