Are the Bio balls really needed in a 14gal. reef?

No, I don't use them in any of my nano's. Just a good amount of LR.

dont use them in any reef. Specially in smaller tanks because its easier to get enough rock. If you've already got more than like 16 or so lbs in that tank, then bioballs could just be an un-needed risk, because bioballs can be nitrate factories, whereas live rock wont build up nitrates.
