Do these lps need something to encrust on or can they bulid their own hard skeletal structure under the fleshy parts?

Yeah, built there own skeleton. If you are planning to frag, it is better to have them encrust on a rock.

Chalice encrust but will grow faster when mounted.

Echinatas & lords will encrust over the cut edges of the frag so they need something to encrust onto. They tend to grow fastest if you mount the flesh level with the rock.

So in order to make it easy to frag when mounted, the rock should be "thin". Do you guys have any tips on what kind of rock to mount them on? Most live rocks I have are "boulder" types. Not very easy to frag those.

Try to find some old dead challice or montipora plate skeletons, the LFS usually has some from doa's
