I'm building a 20 gal high sump. I have my design and need help and input. Should I leave the refuge in or take it out? Is there enough spacing for the baffles? I need a minimum of 12 in. for the skimmer and 5 in. for the return pump.

Thanks.

Do you have an auto-topoff? If so, your return section can be as small as your pump. Can't really tell from the pic but are the baffles 1" apart? The fuge is kinda small. Not sure I would but sand in there unless since it's so small---why take up the room? Just throw some rock rubble and macro algae in there.

Sorry for such a bad picture, i was rushing. The baffles are in a 2" space. Should I have any sand in the sump? I'm going to have a bare bottom main tank. I want to have macro in the fuge, so I thought I needed sand or mud. Thanks again for the reply.

No auto-top off.

With no auto-topoff, I'd suggest dropping the fuge of just putting the macro in your return section in a pond basket. Since all of your evaporation will happen in your return section, you will need to refill it frequently. I'm guessing you're setting up a 75-90 with a sump that size? You'll probably lose 1-2g per day. Even with baffles 12" high, a 5x12x12 return section only holds 3g. So you would need to refill daily. Quite a chore...
