Okay I have a 75 gal 1 1/2 old tank, everything is going just fine! I have 30 lbs of fiji premium on the way, 75 lbs of silica sand i just purchased today, and 25 nassarius snails on the way also. Should be all arriving tomorrow. I also purchased a ten gallon tank today to transfer all my live stock and rock into while I add the new sand, and rock.. But here's my dilemma.. Should I add a heater and filter to the ten gal while the critters are in there? And how long does it take for silica to settle ( I know there has to be some silica guys out there) I'm planning on leaving about a pound of my old sand and crushed coral in a panty hose to seed the new sand bed and not start a new cycle or anything.. But here's another thing I've thought of. I want to have a sump! How would i make this little 10 gal a sump? And also, can I have a sump without a closed stand, mine is a metal stand, but its open. no doors or anything.. If yall have any tips for my 1) Transfer 2) best ways to transfer and seed my new sand bed, OR a list of supplies and equip ill need to make this a sump IF possible.. Thanks a lot guys I appreciate it..

The ten gallon could work, look here: http://www.melevsreef.com/
Make sure your return isn't too strong though. I have to get a new sump or get a new pump.
The evaporation from the tank/sump will most likely mess up that stand and there by the carpet.
Put a heater and filter in the tank while the critters are in there.
For the transfer, fill the 10 half way up and them move all the rock. Then fill it the rest of the way up. Next move the live stock. Put as much water from your tank into the new one as you can.
Your idea to seed the tank should work. I would use all of it in a piece of cheese cloth.
As far as your use of silica, I thought there was a reason not to use it... but I'm no expert.

Well everything has been transfered, I dont have an extra filter to put on the tank, so I just put 2 bubble stones on each corner of the tank along with the heater. They seem to actually like this more lol. my crabs are all over the rock work and the fish just go through all the cravices all fast.. Its cool. Whats the easiest way to get the old sand bed out of my tank? And does anybody know the avereage time it takes for the sand to settle..?
