Hi,

I'm curious to know how far from the wall the folks that have 6 foot tanks have put them and if they could do it differently. how would it be different?

Thanks

Hiya Ripcurrent

placement againist the wall really all depends on what you have on the back of the tank.
Some tanks are drilled on the back for closed loop systems. Some tanks have overflow boxes that hang on the tank- and then there are hang on back filter type tanks.
If you have internal overflows and returns using holes in the bottom of your tank- you can place it right up to the wall if you like.
I made a stand for a frag tank- the stand is wider than the tank and the tank is flush in the front leaving room behind the tank but have the stand on the wall, if that makes sense.
How is your tank set-up?

Hi Glove,
I'm setting up a 150. It's not drilled so I'll be using overflow boxes with a sump in the stand. So I imagine that I only need to leave enough room to assemble the plumbing.

Thanks

Mine is 3/4 inch from the wall and if I had to do it over again, I'd make it about 1 1/2 inches away. Quite hard to feed power plugs back there and I can't put in any piping for a close loop.

I left my 180g about 8 inches from the wall. You never know when a fish might jump back there or something falls behind. I had bookcases on the ends of the tank, so the 8 inches were never seen, but were certainly handy.

My 120 is about 8" due to all the plumbing

When I had a 180 it was 14" from the back wall because that was where there was a rafter for my hanging lights. Best thing I ever did

A removeable back for the stand allowed me to access the sump from either side, it was easier to aquascape, and it was a heck of a lot easier to catch fish that jumped into the overflow.

In addition there was activity in the tank you never see from the front............

yeah, my 210g is about 5-6" away from the wall. My other tanks have been much closer and I find it much easier for tank maintenance more room you have to work; especially with a tank this size that it is impossible to slide or move at all.

My 75 (which is only 4 feet) is about 8"+ off the wall do to plumbing. Def. makes it easier to mess with things behind the tank though.

Just make sure that your floor can handle the load. The farther out from the wall it is, the more stress it is putting on the floor.

That being said, I think a good foot is the minimum you want to leave, just because room to play is a nice thing.
