I ordered 22 lbs of Premium Fiji from Liveaquaria.com and it just came in! It looks really good with almost complete coraline coverage (on the show side). I brushed some off and found come good color. There were also a bunch of little critters that looked like fleas. They were hopping around the box, on and off the rock.

It came as two large rocks that were too big for my aquascape, so I broke them into smaller pieces. Oh my God what a stink when they broke! Some spots (deep within the rock) were blackened. Could this indicate hydrogen sulfide (along with the stink)? Not to worry, I put most of it in a rubbermaid tub to cure. I put five or six small chunks in my tank to populate the sand and aragacrete rocks. I'll have to check chemistry tomorrow.

So far so good.

Good deal!
"fleas" that you found are most likely pods. They are good!!!! Keep them :)

Blackened stuff on rock insides are most likely sulfates of some sorts, usually hydrogen sulfide reacts with metals like iron and the result look black.

the smell is a g ood guage of the amount of die off on the rocks, good idea to split it up and use some too start your cycle.

Yes, forget ammonia tests, these are for loosers :D LOL
We are high-tech, we use smell devices called "the nose"!

good call on splitting it

Got Pics?

just to agree with the others, the smell means it's partially cured which should cut your cycle time down

I didn't think to get any pics before I split it. I do have a couple afterwards.

The first pic is a small chunk I put in the main tank, the second is one of the larger pieces after the split, and the last is the tank I'm putting it all in.
